Let's be honest, the art is ugly as hell needs very, very much getting used to, but the storylines and how tension is kept up - wow. Reminds me of ASOIAF: Small units, each one complete-with-cliffhanger, each advancing different storylines. But in OP it's much more prominent... and I love that even though there is so much fighting, the last scenes are always slowed down, to drag out the emotional point... and then the chapter ends.

I mean, I'm not even reading OP at the moment, because the art is so bad, but I think it deserves the place as one of the Big 3.

Hasn't it been the number one for a couple of years?

I must admit that one of the points that make me stick to Naruto in spite of my issues with the storyline is the artwork. I doubt that I will ever start another manga: I tried Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist, but neither is good enough to attract my grown-up side, nor charming enough to attract what's childish about me (though not only childish, because in the first chapter I identify with Iruka, not Naruto.)

And what's ASOIAF?

Yeah, it has. Fanlore says since the "late 90s"... that's quite a long time! I remember reading OP/making a mail-account with a character name of OP maybe 2004? Or 2005? When the anime started in Germany.

I read One Piece when there was this huge War arc and the (fan-loved, really charming) brother of the main character was in danger and died at the end, so I have an overall interest in how it ends, how the big mysteries are solved, but not in the actual "big" (or small) storyarcs. I'm just not a fan of these endless-longrunning series, in whatever medium. Somewhere along the way I lose interest. Naruto I read until the time-skip.
So I can't give any recommendations, also because while I like the themes of Shonen (all the adventures and the missing focus on romance), I don't actually like reading it that much.

ASOIAF = A Song of Ice and Fire :)
